Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is essential for supporting overall health and reducing the risk of diabetes-related complications.
Blood glucose acts as the source of energy for our body, but if the levels of blood glucose go above or below the normal range, it can harm different organs and lead to various serious diseases. Diabetes and prediabetes, as well as some other metabolic disorders, develop slowly; therefore, it is vital to perform tests of blood glucose levels as a preventive measure.
The fasting blood sugar test is considered to be one of the most common tests that can help healthcare specialists determine the level of blood glucose and diagnose diabetes and the effectiveness of the treatment process.
In some cases, a doctor can order you to do a random blood sugar test, as it allows obtaining more information about the regulation of glucose in your body.
VR Healthy ensures that we have precise diagnoses, state-of-the-art lab equipment, and quick reporting systems for better decision-making in your health care.
What is a fasting blood sugar test?
The Fasting Blood Sugar Test (FBS test) is a type of blood test that determines the amount of glucose present in one’s body after having fasted for eight to 12 hours. While fasting, a person should only drink plain water without consuming any food because food can impact the accuracy of the test results.
As there are no effects from eating any meals on the glucose levels, this test helps understand how the body normally processes glucose. This test is commonly performed to diagnose diabetes, identify prediabetes, and monitor those individuals who are being treated for diabetes.
This test differs from the Random Blood Sugar Test because the latter checks the blood sugar levels at any time of the day without regard to the patient’s meals.
A fasting blood sugar test may be used for:
Diagnosis of diabetes
Identification of prediabetes
Monitoring of blood sugar levels
Testing of diabetes management
Evaluation of metabolism
Regular preventive health checks
What is the Importance of a Fasting Blood Sugar Test?
Elevated blood sugar levels usually occur without showing any signs in the early stages. In the absence of adequate diagnosis and treatment, high blood sugar levels can cause damage to vital organs like the heart, kidneys, eyes, blood vessels, and nerves.
A fasting blood sugar test helps detect abnormal blood glucose levels early, allowing timely medical intervention and better disease management.
Here are some of the main advantages of routine blood sugar testing:
Early Detection of Diabetes
Early detection of diabetes means that you will start getting treatment sooner, thus helping avoid developing some complications.
Diagnosis of Prediabetes
A lot of people suffer from prediabetes and do not even know about that. Getting an early diagnosis enables you to modify your diet and exercise program in order to prevent the development of Type 2 diabetes.
Effective Disease Control
If one is already diagnosed with diabetes, regular tests help to control his/her level of glucose and the efficiency of his/her treatment, medication, nutrition, and exercise regimen.
Preventing Serious Complications
Good maintenance of blood glucose levels will help you avoid the following complications:
Heart disease
Kidney disease
Nerve damage
Blindness
Stroke
Slow healing of wounds
Personalized Treatment
Results of tests enable medical professionals to offer personalized treatment programs.
Fasting Blood Sugar Test: Who Needs to Undergo It?
While everyone may need regular medical examination, there are people who run an increased risk of developing diabetes or other blood sugar conditions.
A doctor may suggest a fasting blood sugar test if:
Have a family history of diabetes.
Be overweight or obese.
Have high blood pressure
Have high cholesterol
Not be physically active
Feel very thirsty
Pass urine more frequently than usual
Feel tired all the time
Lose weight for no apparent reason
Experience blurred vision
Have had a diagnosis of prediabetes
Be over 35 years old
Have had gestational diabetes in the past
Medical professionals also may recommend having a random blood sugar test together with the fasting glucose test.
Symptoms of High Blood Sugar
High blood sugar may not always have any visible effects on the patient during the initial stages of development. But high blood sugar may develop certain warning signs, which are mentioned below.
These symptoms are
Urinating Often
The excess of sugar in the body leads to increased urine production.
Feeling Very Thirsty
Due to the increased urination, the body needs more fluids, leading to the symptom of increased thirst.
Persistent Fatigue
The inability of the body to use the glucose present inside the body leads to fatigue.
Blurred Vision
The high sugar level may temporarily affect the function of the lenses of the eyes, leading to blurred vision.
Hunger
Despite consuming meals, the body's inability to utilize sugar results in the symptom of hunger.
Slow Healing Process
Increased levels of blood sugar lead to a slower process of healing in wounds and increase the probability of infections.
Unexplained Weight Loss
In some patients, even after normal consumption of food, the body is unable to use the sugar properly.
If you experience any of these symptoms, consult a healthcare professional for a proper evaluation. A fasting blood sugar test and a random blood sugar test will tell you if there are any irregularities in your blood glucose level.
The Importance of Early Testing
There is a tendency among many individuals to undergo tests for diabetes when their symptoms become extremely serious. It needs to be known that complications caused by diabetes usually start developing way before the first symptoms arise.
Regular blood sugar tests will help you identify any issues at an early stage and give healthcare specialists recommendations for treatment and lifestyle modifications that can ensure better health.
We at VR Healthy are dedicated to providing you with the best diagnostic services and will use our modern laboratory equipment to provide you with reliable results.

High blood pressure and/or high cholesterol level.
Pregnancy and need for gestational diabetes tests.
Symptoms such as extreme thirst, weakness, blurry vision, frequent urination.
Steps to Ensure Normal Blood Sugar Levels
In addition to conducting tests regularly, developing healthy practices is another vital aspect that ensures normal blood glucose levels. A few small changes in one's life may help you avoid diabetes and become healthier in general.
Eat Healthily
Consume foods that will contribute to keeping your blood glucose balanced. These include:
Vegetables
Whole grains
Fruits (seasonal and in small amounts)
Protein-rich food
Fats
Foods high in fiber
Avoid sweet drinks, junk food, and refined carbohydrates, as they lead to a quick rise in your blood sugar.
Exercise Regularly
Exercising contributes to better glucose management by making your body utilize insulin more efficiently.
Make sure you spend at least 30 minutes exercising per day.
Maintaining Healthy Body Weight
Overweight conditions tend to promote insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes. Shedding off extra pounds may play a critical role in the regulation of blood sugar.
Hydration
Taking sufficient amounts of water promotes body metabolism and healthy glucose levels. Always switch from sugary fluids to water.
Manage Stress Levels
Constant stress can be harmful to your hormones and blood glucose levels. Activities like meditation, deep breathing exercises, sleeping well, and exercising regularly are great stress reducers.
Visit a Health Facility for Screenings
Health screenings can be considered one of the best methods of diagnosing blood glucose conditions before serious complications arise.
Your health practitioner may require you to undergo a fasting blood sugar test and a random blood sugar test.
